We’re almost at the end of our fraud education series, but before we wrap up, we want you to know this: these stories aren’t just for reading, they’re for learning. We share them so you can recognise the red flags early and protect yourself from falling into the traps that have caught others.

Today’s story is about someone like you - Ebuka.

Ebuka runs a small but thriving supermarket in his community. Every day, he’s busy managing suppliers, restocking goods, and attending to customers. Just like many business owners, Ebuka relies heavily on his bank’s online services to manage payments and transfers.

One quiet evening, while reviewing his orders and checking inventory on his phone, Ebuka received an email that appeared to be 100% legitimate. It had his bank’s logo, official colours, and even addressed him by name. The subject line read:

“URGENT: Suspicious activity on your account – Action Required”

The message said that someone had tried to access his account and that he needed to verify his identity immediately to avoid a temporary freeze without thinking twice, because panic had set in. Ebuka clicked the link in the email. It took him to a page that looked exactly like his bank’s website. He entered his login details, thinking he was securing his account.

Just minutes later, he got an alert: ₦200,000 had been withdrawn from his account.

Shocked and confused, Ebuka called his bank immediately. That’s when it hit him, the email wasn’t real. It was a phishing scam. And unfortunately, the money had already been moved through multiple accounts, making recovery almost impossible.

So, what should you take away from this?
  •  Banks will never ask you to click a link in an email or message to verify your identity.

  • If it feels urgent or scary, pause and confirm from an official source.

  • Never share your banking login, PIN, or OTP with anyone online or offline.

Ebuka’s story is a reminder that these scams are designed to look real. But with a calm mind and a cautious eye, you can stop them before they cause damage.

Let’s stay alert. Let’s keep our money safe.

Watch out for the final part of our fraud education series next week, it’s one you won’t want to miss.
